Volunteering

As a parent, you are encouraged to complete your minimum of five hours of volunteer work each month for the school. In order to begin volunteering in a classroom, you must have proof of a current TB test. Note that the school will not be offering TB tests during the 2011-12 school year. Parents will have to receive these from their own medical facilities. TB tests are valid for four years.

Why is it important to get involved?
  • Research shows that parents are the biggest factor in their children's educational success.
  • Studies have shown that parents who get involved and volunteer at their child's school are more likely to have successful kids.
  • When parents continue to stay involved, the "doors of opportunity" will stay open. When parent involvement stops, the "doors of opportunity" will start to close.

How can I get involved being a working parent?
  • You can volunteer for special events like Lantern Festival, Parent University, attend Friends of AEA Meetings, attend Site Council Meetings, Class Field Trips, Jog-a-thons, Breakfast Club, etc. To see upcoming Friends events, go to the Events page.
  • Many teachers can provide projects for you to complete at home.

Beginning the 2011-2012 school year we will record volunteer hours via the sign in computer at the front desk at the school. Be sure to sign in and out whenever you are volunteering at the school. This will be our only record of your volunteer hours. We can use the sum of all volunteer hours when we renew our charter at the district and this number is especially useful when applying for grants.
